Es Alpina realmente?

Important: Since listing this Alpina E21 I have received all sorts of emails questioning the validity of this car being a genuine Alpina. The main issue was that this car has a 1.8 liter 320i engine in it. Because the car is so obviously an original car, not something cobbled together, this question bothered me as well. I sent several emails to the third and current owner of the car, and he went back to the person he bought the car from 11 years ago: The second owner is a BMW enthusiast and highschool auto shop teacher near Vacaville CA, which is near Travis Air Force base. The original owner was an Air Force Colonol who bought the car new in Germany. It is a real Alpina that was special ordered with a 320i engine so it would pass emmissions in California. The Colonol knew he was bringing it back here, that's why he ordered it that way. Here is the direct response from the third owner:
" I bought the car from a huge BMW enthusiast. He has been watching the on line auction for this car. He told me he bought the car from the original owner who was an Air Force Colonel. The Colonel purchased the car from a dealer in Germany when he was stationed over there. Apparently you could have the dealers build out your car with Alpina parts in any combination you like. The Colonel, concerned about smog issues when he would bring the car back to the USA left the engine in a smog legal condition. He was more interested in the handling and look so he had the beefed up suspension and the FD3 chassis kit added as well as the steering wheel, shift knob, and air stems. The dash plaque was also installed at the dealer.
So it is an Alpina."
So that settles it. Those Ebay members who pointedly questioned my honesty should be more careful before stating categorically that only they know the truth about things. This is probably a one-of-a-kind Alpina, factory special ordered in Germany for use in California.
eBay: ?BMW E21 Alpina?
